2-year-old Luxembourg killed after being hit by a 2-tonne ice statue in Place Guillaume II Christmas Market.

An ice statue in Place Guillaume II Christmas market, Luxembourg city, southern Luxembourg on the evening of November 24 suddenly collapsed and broke into parts, while many people walked around.

Part of the statue struck the toddler boy walking at Christmas market with his family. "The two-year-old child was seriously injured and died in an ambulance," police said.

The incident made the boys' relatives and witnesses present at the scene extremely frightened. The victim's family is receiving psychological support.

The author of the statue, French sculptor Samuel Girault, told police that the ice statue he created weighed two tons and claimed it could not fall on its own. Girault said he had 19 years of experience in sculpting ice statues and had never met a similar case.

Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel on November 24 expressed deep condolences to the victims' families and closed the Christmas markets that day.
