The chairman of Huawei said the telecom group is planning to produce its own components at its factory in Europe.
"We are conducting a feasibility study on opening a factory in Europe. Choosing a country will depend on that study," Huawei Chairman Luong Hoa said today at AFP headquarters in Paris.
Although he did not specify a schedule for the plan, Luong said "it could happen very quickly". "In the field of 5G technology, we are no longer dependent on the supply of chips and other components from US businesses," he added.
US President Trump has asked US companies to limit their business with Huawei, making it difficult for Chinese telecom groups to access American companies' chips and technologies such as Micron, Qualcomm and Intel. Therefore, the company had to diversify its supply base. Huawei is focusing on Europe and has announced plans to spend $ 40 billion on supplies from Europe.
US intelligence believes Huawei is unreliable and that its equipment is a threat to US national security. Chinese law requires individuals and organizations to support and cooperate with national intelligence efforts. However, Huawei denied U.S. allegations, insisting it was not spying on Chinese authorities.
