Hong Kong police on September 6 arrested at least 289 people to participate in protests in the Kowloon district to protest the postponement of the Legislative Council election.
Today was expected to be the day of the election of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, but the special zone government announced to move the vote to the following year due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hundreds of riot police have been deployed to Kowloon to control the situation.
Just before 17 o'clock, the police fired tear gas grenades at the protesters in Mong Kok.
Chaos broke out when several plainclothes officers sprayed pepper gas and wrestled protesters to the ground.
Police said at least 289 people had been arrested, mainly because of the illegal gathering.
Hong Kong authorities in a statement released tonight condemned the protesters' actions as "illegal and selfish".

Some countries criticized China for imposing Hong Kong security laws, claiming that the law violates the "one country, two systems" principle.
The Chinese government and the Hong Kong government repeatedly affirmed that the security law only targets a small group of people, while the rights and freedom of the special zone people and the interests of foreign investors are still guaranteed.
