Environmental activist Thunberg was nominated by Swedish MPs Holm and Svenneling yesterday for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.
Jens Holm and Hakan Svenneling, two members of the Swedish leftist party, said that Thunberg, 17, had "worked actively to make politicians more aware of the climate crisis," asserting "the towards reducing emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is an act of peace. "
The Paris Agreement on climate change was adopted by 195 countries, including the US, in France in December 2015. Countries agreed to cut down on CO2 and other emissions from burning fossil fuels, in order to curb rising global temperatures. However, US President Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the agreement in June 2017.
Nominations for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize were submitted on February 1. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has not commented on the nominations.
Thunberg was nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, but the final award went to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his contribution to peace with neighboring Eritrea.
US President Donald Trump is also very interested in this prestigious award. The White House boss announced in September last year that if the Nobel Peace Prize was a fairly elected award, he was one of the most deserving.
Trump in January said he was "holding his hands" on the Nobel Peace Prize and said he had created an agreement to end the conflict for Ethiopia, but the winner was Prime Minister Ahmed.
Thunberg was named "Person of the Year" by Time magazine last year and has been supported by celebrities such as actor Leonardo DiCaprio, former US first lady Michelle Obama. However, many people believe that Thunberg has not taken any practical action to protect the environment, only issuing extreme messages and causing confusion.
