President Steinmeier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the leaders of Eastern European countries attended the event of lighting candles, placing roses in the void on the rest of the wall. Many events to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall were also held in the German capital, including a festival at the Brandenburg Gate.

The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 to prevent the flow of people from East Germany to West Germany. The two-sided boundary of the city was originally a barbed wire fence and brick walls, then it was built with gun tents, fortifications and guard posts over a length of 160 km.

On November 9, 1989, East German leader Egon Krenz removed restrictions on traveling with the people. Tens of thousands of people flock to checkpoints along the Wall, claiming west Berlin. It was also the day that marked the fall of the Berlin Wall when the first checkpoint opened, allowing people on the east and west sides to pass.

This is considered one of the events leading to the end of the Cold War, as well as the reunification of Germany in 1990.
