The Philippines is located on the Pacific Ring shaped like a horseshoe stretching 40,000 km from Japan, Indonesia to the Americas. This is the place where tectonic activities of the Earth's crust occur and often suffer from earthquakes, volcanic eruptions.

Mindanao Island suffered two earthquakes in late October. At least 8 people were killed and more than 300 were injured by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake on October 29. The 6.5-magnitude earthquake two days later was thought to be aftershock, causing a major hotel to collapse.
