Mr. Mai was born on November 29, 1962 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. He graduated in clinical medicine at Zhongshan Medical University in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province in July 1986.

Wuhan Center Hospital today made a statement expressing deep regret over the departure of Dr. Mai, who is judged to be wholeheartedly devoted to the patient and made an important contribution to the ophthalmology.

Doctor Ly Van Luong, 34, one of the first people to warn about nCoV in China, died on February 7 after being infected with the virus. Dr. Li's death caused a wave of outrage on social media with the government's reaction to the outbreak, while also showing the risks faced by Chinese doctors on the front lines against epidemics.

Chinese officials say about 3,000 Chinese doctors have been infected with nCoV, of which at least 18 have died.
