New Zealand: Scuba divers deployed to find two people missing in a volcanic eruption on White Island, despite the risk of the mountain working again.
"Divers face special, challenging conditions when the underwater view is always below two meters. They are focusing on the area where a floating body was discovered earlier this week," the deputy commander of the scene told the Associated Press. New Zealand police John Tims said today.
The New Zealand government yesterday launched a campaign to search and recover the bodies of the dead after being pressured by victims' families. A special unit moved to White Island by helicopter on the morning of December 13, bringing 6 of the 8 dead bodies confirmed to be dead.
The activity comes as seismologists predict volcanoes could resume operations in the next few days. The likelihood of the erupting mountain has dropped significantly, but scientists say the risk around White Island remains high.
New Zealand said there were 47 people on White Island at the time of the volcano eruption on 9/12. Authorities confirmed at least 13 people were killed, of which 5 died at the hospital and warned the death toll could rise to 16.
28 people are being treated at the hospital due to severe burns, of which 21 are in critical condition. Affected victims come from Australia, USA, UK, China, Malaysia and New Zealand.
