Two years before her death due to a traffic accident, Princess Diana once said on television that she wanted to be queen.

However, that is not a position obtained from her marriage to the British royal family, but she wants to be queen of the hearts of the people.

Diana has used her reputation to raise awareness on a wide range of issues, from leprosy and domestic violence to mental health.

Months after her death, Diana still became the focus of the media, talking about the dangers of mines and ERW in Angola.

Not only seen as a global icon, Diana has become "the princess in the hearts of the people", according to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Blair used this phrase in Diana's post-death speech, trying to find a way to alleviate the great pain and loss of the British people at the time.

The Princess of Wales completed the divorce proceedings from Prince Charles in 1996, but the media still watched her "moves" over the summer vacation with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed the following year.

Royal British received news of the accident while at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

"The Royal's first response was 'we have to protect two kids. There will be procedures after that but that's what we have to do'," said Jonathan Dimbleby, series author.

"Two sons are a priority for Charles. He really cares for them," said Penny Junor, the biographer.

When TV programs started reporting on the accident, the Royal Family posted a brief announcement that they were "shocked and saddened" when they heard the news.

But for British people grieving over Diana's death, "the reaction was very unusual," as historian Kate Williams recounted in "The Windsors".

Hour after hour, all eyes were on Buckingham Palace waiting for a bigger move or declaration.

"People deeply mourn Diana because she has created an extraordinary relationship with all the people," said Anji Hunter, Blair's former adviser.

From the public's perspective, the Queen and her family were too silent about Diana's departure.

In the face of increasing criticism, Blair had been in the prime minister for only four months.

Blair said his role was to protect the royal family, preventing people's anger from turning into rage.

When speaking in front of the microphone, he tried to share the emotion that the public had been waiting for.

When it comes to the phrase "princess in the hearts of the people" in his autobiography, Blair says it is a somewhat corny and excessive description.

"He came up with this wonderful description and it hit the public's mentality," Kay said.

Before Diana's funeral, Queen Elizabeth II responded to a public request for the royal family to show interest in the Princess' death.

And during Diana's funeral, the Queen also showed her mourning to the Princess.
