If he dies to cheat insurance or to end a relationship and start a new life, Steve Rambam has witnessed many such cases.
Rambam is a private detective who searches for the missing, including those who pretend to be dead.
The reason many people fake death is that they owe great debt.
Some people plan to scam carefully.
Rambam runs the investigation company Pallorium Inc. based in Brooklyn, New York, with offices and branches worldwide.
"I once encountered a woman leaving a car by a large lake in New England, showing that she was drowning. Her former high school boyfriend was determined to investigate the case because she could not find the body."
Rambam took the case after his ex-boyfriend found him.
The girl later admitted to faking death, saying she was abused by her current boyfriend so she had to do so to escape hell life.
Fake people are often found dead because they keep in touch with their spouses, parents or sometimes unable to give up pets.
In the 1980s, Rambam was tasked with finding a coin collector after he faked his death in New York.
Rambam said this investigation taught him a lesson: be very patient.
Rambam added that investigative work is not as dramatic as described on TV, because 90% are fixed procedures and they are often "boring".
The detective described the post-death life as a "full-time job".
Rambam said that "those who plan carefully from the beginning are the best".
Most cases of Rambam handling are fake deaths to cheat insurance.
A man originally living in the United States pretended to die in the Philippines.
When an insurance company hires Rambam, the first thing he does is request the entire customer profile.
"15 years ago, I investigated a person, I could not reveal my identity but call him Jamil," Rambam said.
"He returned to his homeland, the beneficiary said that he died at two Manger squares in Bethlehem town in the West Bank. When we arrived, the address turned out to be a clinic. They
Rambam then went to the Palestinian government headquarters in Gaza City.
The detective identified Jamil's new identity, passed the information on to insurance companies and US officials.
"His wife is suing the insurance company for refusing payment. The judge at the time said: 'We have to postpone this trial because your' deceased 'husband was just taken downstairs."
Once the dummy was found, Rambam approached them before filming the video they confessed.
"Sometimes I can joke a bit," Rambam said.
