Republican and Democratic leaders reached a power-sharing agreement, allowing Democrats to control Senate committees.
"I am pleased to announce this morning that the leaders of both parties have completed a resolution to organize for the Senate," Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer said Feb. 3 after meeting with the minority leader.
"We're going to pass the resolution in the Senate today, which means committees can quickly set up and work as Democrats take control," Schumer added.
Democrats became a majority in the Senate after two congressmen elected in Georgia were sworn in last month.
The 50-50 ratio, however, prevented Democrats from taking control of key committees as the Senate was operating under the rules of the previous Congress, when Republicans controlled the Senate.
Democrats now control all levels of power in Washington.
