India Senator Sengar of the ruling Bharatiya Janata party today was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a young woman.
Former Kuldeep Singh Sengar of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, was found guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Crime Act earlier this week. A court in New Delhi today declared Sengar sentenced to life in prison for raping a young woman, Tanarer Ahmad Mir, a former senator's lawyer, said on the same day.
Sengar became the most senior Indian politician to face such a harsh sentence in recent years. The court also declared the former congressman to pay $ 35,000 to the victim's family.
Lawyer Tanarer Ahmad Mir said the client would appeal in the Delhi Supreme Court.
The case involving former Senator Sengar drew attention all over India last year when the accuser, a teenager, said he was raped by Sengar in 2017. The victim attempted suicide and accused the police of refusing investigate.
In July, a truck crashed into the victim's car, causing two of her relatives, including the last witness of the rape, to be killed and she was seriously injured.
Relatives of the girl suspected the accident was a "kill kill password" plot targeting the witnesses and victims of the case. Indian police have launched a murder investigation into Senator Sengar based on a complaint filed by the victim's family.
"He was punished. I am extremely happy. Today we demanded justice," India Today quoted the victim's sister.
Sexual rape and violence against women in India has come under the spotlight since the death of a female student in New Delhi in 2012. Officials tighten punishment for rape offenses but show no signs. Which shows that the violence against women is in remission.
According to the latest Indian government figures, nearly 33,660 rapes were recorded in 2017, an average of 62 cases a day.
