New Chinese ambassador to Canada Tung Boi Vu meets with CFO Huawei Meng Wanzhou, who is under house arrest in Vancouver.
"Hometown and nearly 1.4 billion Chinese are her most loyal supporters. We hope she will return safely to China soon," said Tung Bupu, who took office this month, told Meng at her home in Vancouver, following a statement released on November 29 by the Chinese embassy in Canada.
The Ambassador emphasized to Huawei's director that Beijing "is determined to protect the legitimate rights and interests of citizens and businesses, will continue to urge Canada to correct mistakes and take measures to resolve the issues." as soon as possible".
Meng Wanzhou, 47, daughter of Huawei's founder, was arrested by Canada while in transit at Vancouver International Airport last December at the request of the United States. Washington wants to put Meng on trial for fraud for allegedly violating US sanctions on Iran and cheating US banks. Meng Wanzhou's lawyer denied the allegation.
Meng's arrest has caused an unprecedented diplomatic rift between China and Canada. Nine days after Meng was arrested, China arrested two Canadians on charges of espionage, a move allegedly in retaliation. The two are accused of stealing Chinese state secrets and are being held in custody, allowed to visit the consulate only 30 minutes a month.
Manh is currently on bail, waiting for the date of the start of the extradition hearing in January next year. She had to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet, under house arrest from 11:00 to 6:00 but was free to move around in Vancouver if there were security guards.
