The Chinese ambassador accused the US of "spreading political virus" at the United Nations, after Trump fiercely attacked Beijing over Covid-19.
"While the international community is really fighting strongly against Covid-19, the United States spread the political virus at the United Nations General Assembly," replied Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Truong Quan.
"I must emphasize that the US statement is not in line with the general atmosphere at the United Nations General Assembly," he added.
Earlier, in his video speech delivered at the United Nations General Assembly, US President Donald Trump said China and the World Health Organization (WHO) "had false statements that there was no evidence.
"Then, they erroneously claimed that asymptomatic people would not spread the virus. The United Nations needs to hold China accountable for their actions," Trump said.
This is not the first time Trump has asked China to take responsibility for Covid-19, arguing that its initial erroneous response caused a severe pandemic outbreak.
Apart from Covid-19, a number of other issues have pushed US-China relations to the lowest level in decades, such as technology competition, Hong Kong or Taiwan.
