Japan: One Panama cargo ship last night sank in Tokyo Bay, killing two crew members and six missing, including two Vietnamese citizens.
The Japanese coast guard said the Panama cargo ship, JIA DE, weighed 1,925 tons, was stranded in the Tokyo bay just as Typhoon Hagibis struck Japan. The ship lost contact signal at about 21h40 on 12/10.
There were 12 sailors aboard, including two Vietnamese, three Burmese and seven Chinese. By this morning, 4 people have been rescued. It is not clear the fate of 6 people missing.
Typhoon Hagibis hit Honshu Island in Japan on the evening of October 12. This is considered the strongest storm to hit Tokyo since 1958, causing heavy rain on a large scale in Japan. The Chikuma river dyke, which runs through Nagano province, was broken, causing floodwaters to flood many houses. Military helicopters were mobilized to rescue people trapped in houses near the river.
The damage caused by Typhoon Hagibis continued to increase as many areas were still flooded. About 425,000 homes were without electricity, many worried the power outage would last for weeks after Hurricane Faxai struck last month.
The Japanese military has canceled parades on the sea and mobilized tens of thousands of soldiers to rescue people trapped after the storm of Hagibis. The storm has left 18 people dead, nearly 150 injured and 13 missing.
