At least two people died and 15 were injured after a car crashed into a pedestrian zone in Trier, Germany.

Local newspaper Trierischer Volksfreund quoted a witness as saying that the dark gray car rushed at high speed into the crowd and someone was thrown.

The newspaper added that the mayor of Trier city rushed to the scene and held a press conference.

"An out-of-control driver appeared in the city. Certainly two people were killed and up to 15 were injured, of which some people's conditions are quite serious. We are trying to do a full review."

There is no information about the motive leading to the incident.

Parents are required to pick up their children from school.

Mr. Uwe Konz, a Trier city police spokesman, said it was unclear exactly what happened and the information surrounding the incident still needed clarification.

The incident recalls the car crash in 2016 at the Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people.
