A 10-year-old boy was found at a train station in Shanghai, said he was begged by his father for failing to finish his homework.
The Shanghai police website today said police officers on 5/12 received a report call at 4:45 am about a boy with a schoolbag on his knees and begging at a city station.
"I was told by my teacher not to finish my homework," the boy said. "Dad then punished me by giving him a bowl, telling him to kneel and beg." He added that his father was not drunk and had been sitting at the station for 45 minutes while his father went to work.
The police took the boy to headquarters, fed and contacted his mother. An hour later, the mother showed up, bringing a coat to pick her up. She said her husband was sad because his son was often told not to do his homework, but she disagreed with the punishment of her husband's children.
Police believe that children should not be punished by begging for begging because it can damage their self-esteem and disrupt public order. Many social media users expressed sympathy for the father's disappointment but said he could put his son in danger.
"I can imagine how hard it was for a father to wake up early to work and get angry because his child didn't study hard," a social networking user wrote. "However, begging at the train station is too dangerous for children."
"What does the father think? It will be too late if anything happens to the child. Thank goodness, the police have stepped in," another wrote.
