Indonesian Young man in Aceh province fainted after being sentenced to 100 whips for having sex before marriage.
Under Islamic law, a 22-year-old young man today was fined 100 rattan whips against the back of a mosque in Timur district, Aceh province, Indonesia. While serving his sentence halfway through, he begged the executioner to stop and faint from pain.
Authorities tried to revive him and let the medical staff take care of him for a short time, then continued the punishment of the whip. Young men are taken to an emergency hospital at a nearby hospital after having received 100 whips.
The same woman who had sex with this young man and another man who had an affair with her also received the same punishment. About 500 people enjoyed watching the punishment, while some people shouted "hit harder, stronger".
"This is the consequence they have suffered because of the law violations," said Muhammad Yunus, an onlooker.
Public whips are common in many parts of Indonesia to punish prohibited acts under Islamic law such as gambling, drinking, gay sex or before marriage. Aceh province on Sumatra is the only province in Indonesia, a country with a majority Muslim population, applying Islamic law in parallel with the criminal code.
In July, three people were also fined 100 whips each for having sex before marriage. Human rights groups criticize this openly cruel punishment. Indonesian President Joko Widodo also called for an end to the situation, but the punishment is still ongoing.
