5 million people left Wuhan before the blockade for acute pneumonia due to Corona virus was issued on January 23.
About 9 million people remain in Wuhan, Hubei province, where the onset of acute pneumonia occurred, Mayor Chu Tien Vuong said at a press conference on January 26. He added that out of the 2,700 people being followed, about 1,000 will probably be confirmed to have the new strain of Corona virus (nCoV). As of yesterday, Wuhan had 533 infected people. Hubei accounts for more than half of the approximately 2,500 new patients infected with Corona virus in China.
China ordered the blockade of Wuhan and some cities on January 23 to prevent the risk of disease spreading to other cities and provinces, amid increasing travel demand during the Chinese New Year. However, many left the city earlier for a holiday, while some left the night before the blockade was announced.
The outbreak of suspected pneumonia came from a market specializing in seafood and fresh meat in Wuhan, which killed 80 people. Chinese health officials say the ability to spread nCoV becomes stronger and the virus can spread during incubation.
Beijing has announced five more cases of infection, including one 9-month-old child, the first confirmed infant case.
China today extended the Chinese New Year holiday by an additional three days to limit the spread of the virus. Many important events have been canceled and famous attractions are also closed during Tet. China also announced new semester suspensions at all kindergartens, elementary, secondary and tertiary schools until further notice from the Ministry of Education was issued.
