Egypt A court in Cairo sentenced two years to jail and fined five girls for posting "indecent dance" videos on social networking site TikTok.

The Cairo Economic Court, Egypt on July 27, sentenced a prison sentence of £ 300,000 to nearly 20 defendants to 20-year-old student Haneen Hossam and 22-year-old girl Mawada Eladhm.

They were found guilty of "violating the values and principles of the Egyptian family", obscene and promoting human trafficking by posting "indecent" videos on TikTok.

Upon hearing the verdict, the two defendants collapsed in tears, while Eladhm shouted: "God is wrong, I don't need".

Hossam and Eladhm recently became famous on TikTok, attracting millions of followers thanks to short videos dancing to the fascinating tune of Egypt.

However, what makes them famous is not considered suitable for Egyptian society, where people can go to jail for vague charges such as "abuse of social networks", "spreading fake news.

Ahmed el-Bahkeri, Eladhm's lawyer, confirmed the verdict and said prosecutors considered the photos and videos on Eladhm's TikTok "disgrace and insult".

Despite being considered much more liberal than other Gulf countries, Egypt, where Muslims are predominant, has made conservative decisions in the past half century.

However, the series of arrests involving "ethical issues" are thought to be part of a policy to control individual liberties, which has been intensified since President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi came to power.
